Did you know there’s a rap song about kubb? Thanks to rapper Lil Greyhound, there is! How did this come to pass? It all started with a student in the drumline at Moravian University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
This one time at band camp—no this story isn’t going where you think it is—Dominic Trabosci was introduced to kubb by his director. “We instantly fell in love with it… it really brought us together.” said Trabosci. The drummers couldn’t get enough of the game, and they soon got started setting up a college club. Trabosci and his friends founded the Moravian Kubb Team and started meeting casually to play the game we all love.
With a little help from the student government, the club was able to secure funds to buy some sets and started playing around campus. According to Trabosci, “it started becoming almost like a meme around the school” as club members would leave king crowns on whiteboards saying “join kubb.” The club was growing fast and focused on being an outlet for students who didn’t feel they fit in with more athletically demanding sports, but still wanted a sense of community and competition.
The passionate members of the Moravian Kubb Team set up an event they called Kubb Festival of Creativity. This was a chance for students to create and share kubb-themed art, including a kubb king cake. Trabosci had already been writing and performing music under the name Lil Greyhound for a couple of years, so he set out to debut a new song—”The Kubb Rap.”
The song is chock full of Moravian references. “Meet me at Benigna for a game or two” is a direct reference to a statue on campus the kubb team played near. Even Lil Greyhound’s name is a reference to the Moravian mascot, the greyhound.
At its core though, “The Kubb Rap” is a love letter to the game of kubb. And maybe it’s just the anthem the kubb world has been waiting for. Trabosci says, “I love performing it in front of people who don’t know kubb… it sorta explains the game and maybe it encourages people to look up the game.”
Self-described as a musician most of his life, Trabosci dabbled with plenty of instruments until eventually settling on drums. A new found love of performing, led him to start creating DIY beats on his computer and adding his self-written raps. While many of his songs relate to his time at Moravian, the now graduated Trabosci says he is attempting to move into new areas. One that won’t change is his emphasis on humor. Lil Grehound’s influences include Young Gravy, Hoodie Allen, and Childish Gambino among others. You can find more music, info and even merch on Lil Greyhound’s landing page.
As for the Moravian Kubb Team? They still play around campus and hold events. According to Trabosci, he and most of the kubb team have never been to a tournament. Maybe they can check out the tournament calendar and change that soon.
