EAU CLAIRE, Wisc. — It’s time once again for North America’s largest and oldest tournament, the U.S. National Kubb Championship. This is the twelfth year of the tournament, organized by Eric Anderson.
The annual team draw was held on June 30 at Lazy Monk Brewery. Results of the draw can be seen on the official Saturday group list. Teams will be seeded into a bracket based on their group finishing. By the end of the day there will be a top four awarded in the silver and bronze, and the top 16 teams remaining in the championship bracket will prepare to play on Sunday. The Sunday group winners will move into the semi-finals, and eventually crown a national champion.
Like last year, this tournament filled up fast. All 128 team spots are spoken for, but there is a waiting list. You can join the list by emailing usakubbb[at]gmail.com.
Though the tournament starts on Saturday of Championship Weekend, the fun starts on that Friday. The annual U.S. Junior Kubb Championship will be happening from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. the day before the big show. In addition to all of these fun activities, pitches will be open for people to practice and play friendlies all day Friday. As per usual, there will be a Pre-Kubb Party beginning at 5 p.m. at The Fire House bar in downtown Eau Claire. Stop by for a look at the Stapp King trophy, drink some good beer, and hold plenty of kubbversation with other players.
Even if you don’t plan to or get a chance to play in this tournament it is definitely worth checking it out. Spectators are welcome and encouraged. This is a chance to see the best of the best battle in some of the most intense games of kubb you’ll ever witness.
