RONE, Gotland, Sweden — Two different teams of six players each from the United States will be traveling to Sweden to compete in the Kubb World Championship. This is the largest six-person tournament in the world and boasts participation from many countries. The Kubb World Championship has been held in Rone since 1995. The two American teams competing this year are Kubb De Grace and Kubbicide Squad.
Kubb De Grace
This team is a combination of the Grasskickers and Chippewaffles, both teams that are no stranger to the podium. In fact, this very squad of six are the defending back-to-back champions of the Dallas Oktoberfest tournament. They’ve been preparing for this chance for years, and it should be fun to follow this roster (half of which are All-Americans!) as they compete.
Kubbicide Squad
This team’s origins only date back to the most recent Ice Games where Cody Glorioso convinced Trevor Bailey and Spencer Ollmann they should make this happen. A few months and a couple roster changes later, they had nailed down a team of six willing to make the trip. Kubbicide Squad is a play on the film “Suicide Squad” about a ragtag group of anti-heros. Bailey notes, “Our first time throwing batons as six people will be at the Air BNB in Sweden!” This roster also includes some All-Americans, so keep an eye on them.
Past Americans at the Kubb World Championship
These two teams join a growing list of U.S.-based teams to heading to Sweden for the Kubb World Championship. Claire Mni was the first in 2014 and took home the silver medal. Their story was featured on page 40 of the 2015 issue of Kubbnation Magazine.
Chaska Kubb sent a team in 2018, which you can read more about in part I and part II of John Oman‘s recap.
Gregg Jochimsen and Grant Scott hold the honor of being the only American kubb players to win the Kubb World Championship. These two were part of a multi-national team in 2022. More on this incredible feat can be found in this Volume One article.
Could this be the year a fully American team wins it all? Keep an eye on Kubb On’s social media as our foreign correspondent Sara Rydzik posts updates and hopefully streams throughout the weekend. Competition begins Friday, with the championship bracket taking place on Sunday.
