West Coast Kubb Championships 2018 Recap

SOUTH PASADENA, Calif.— The third annual West Coast Kubb Championships was welcomed with beautiful sunny weather, temperatures in the low 80s and not a cloud in the sky. The mountains in the distance provided an ideal backdrop to make this maybe the best setting for kubb in the world. Many Midwesterners made the trip to unofficially kick-off the outdoor kubb tournament season for 2018.

Over 30 teams and 75 players from seven different states attended the the minimum two person tournament. The day started with six rounds of Klassic style qualifying play followed by “Gold” and “Silver” bracket championship play. The qualifying rounds in the morning went off without a hitch and many great kubb battles where had as the morning continued. At lunch, tacos were sold by the local Girl Scout troop and everyone was surprised by the Mariachi band that came by for lunchtime entertainment.

After lunch, the top eight teams were seeded into the “Gold” bracket for championship play. The semi-finals matched the top seeded Kadoodles (Evan Fitzgerald, Michelle Fitzgerald) against Kubbix Rubes (Marshall Dostal, John Pettersson) and Cali-gan Kubb (Phil Dickinson, Joe Zenas) against El Ringers (Colton Ellringer, Dave Ellringer). The Kadoodles were able to pull out the 2-1 victory with a little help from Mario Hernandez, who had to step in for a game, including the game one winning king shot when Michelle had to take a game off for a work emergency. In the second semi-final, the El Ringers were able to beat Cali-gan Kubb two games to one.

The finals matched two family teams against each other, with the husband and wife duo, the Kadoodles, against the grandfather and grandson duo El Ringers. The whole match was a tight battle with the first two games split for each team. In the final game, El Ringers were able to take advantage of a line and win the match. The win was capped off by a big embrace from the grandfather and grandson duo that really exemplifies what kubb is all about!
