MINNEAPOLIS — Captain Ken’s Kubb Tournament returns to the City of Lakes Loppet on Jan. 27, 2018. This tournament is the largest winter tournament kubb tournament in the world and traditionally takes place on the frozen surface of Lake Calhoun. If the weather doesn’t cooperate, and the ice of Lake Calhoun is not safe, the event will be moved to nearby Theodore Wirth Park.
This year, teams will compete in two divisions—a competitive championship division and a recreational Lilla Loppet division. The championship division is aimed at players with previous tournament experience who wish to compete against the best of the best. This division will start with group play followed by a knockout bracket. The winners of the championship division will be awarded the coveted Frostbeard Trophy.
For less experienced, or brand new players, and those who play kubb more casually, the Lilla Loppet will be a better fit. This division will place teams in groups of four where they will play round robin matches against each other before being seeded into a knockout bracket. Teams losing their first knockout match will move to the consolation bracket. Teams will be guaranteed at least five matches.
