ALANSON, Mich. — The Great Lakes 1v1 Kubb Championship is back to kick off the 2022 season as the first of three tournaments in Michigan. This annual event will take place on the 17 acre grounds of the Great Lakes Kubb Stadium at Phil and Stormy Dickinson’s property in Alanson. Formerly known as the Michigan 1v1 tournament, this event has been held every year since 2016.

The tournament will start off with seven qualifying rounds of play using the Klassic system, where individuals will battle against each other fighting for a spot for the top eight. Those top players will be seeded into a championship bracket and vie for the title of the 2022 Great Lakes 1v1 Champion. Awards will be presented to the top four finishers as well as the top finisher in the consolation bracket. This year’s trophies will include custom made Viking swords made out of ash and mahogany and laser burned with tourney information. In addition, the Mister Rogers Friendly Neighbor Award will also go to the competitor who has the most neighbors throughout the day.

The pitches will be marked with painted baselines and string for center field and sidelines. No stakes will be used. The tournament will use Kubb United Rules for Open Play version 1.2, which includes the neighbor rule. The 100 percent rule will also be used to determine whether or not field kubbs are in bounds.

In addition, there will be two events at half time. The first is a skills contest that will challenge competitors for a special award. For the second, competitors will have a chance to establish a kubb world record. More about these two events will be disclosed at the tournament.

There is free on-site camping is available with water and electric hookups, if needed. Phil Dickinson will have tents and cots available with a glamping-style setup, if needed. A heated outdoor shower system and a water station are available for campers. The 8 foot deep swimming pool is available for participants. Registration is $30 per player, payable on the day of the event. This includes entry into the tournament, a custom made crown drink holder, and food provided by the Great Lakes Kubb Club for the weekend. This a kubb retreat weekend complete with bonfires and friendlies on Friday and Saturday nights. Anyone interested in playing should register via private message on Facebook or by texting Phil at (231) 330-1794. Consider bringing the whole family for a weekend of fun. If you’re planning to stay in the area, consider seeing the many sights and attractions, including  Mackinaw Island, Sleeping Bear Dunes in Traverse City, or Colonial Michilimackinac Park (landmark fort/fur trading village and reenactments) in Mackinaw City, and numerous beaches.
