NEW BALTIMORE, Mich. — This fall, Motor City Kubb will bring the first tournament to the Metro Detroit area with the Motown Kubb Showdown. This scrambler-style tournament will be held on Sept. 30 at Maynard Memorial Park in New Baltimore, Michigan. Kubb United’s Rules for Open Play will be used and there will be painted lines on the pitches. The friendly neighbor rule will also be in effect and sets will be provided by PlayYardGames.com.
The tournament is designed for both new and veteran kubb players. The scramble format will consist of five rounds of qualifying games, where each player is randomly paired up with another player. Games will each have a 25 minute time limit. Players on a winning team get a point, a tie gets half of a point, and leading/trailing will be .67/.33 respectively. After the qualification period, players will be split into two groups based on their scores. The top eight will move into the championship group, while the remaining players will go to the consolation group. Top three finishers in each group will receive trophies.
They’re hoping to have concessions available with proceeds benefiting a local non-profit group. Phil Dickinson, from Play Yard Games, will have a selection of games on sale, including kubb sets. This year the Motown Kubb Showdown will donate a portion of registration proceeds to charity.
Pitches will be open for practice that Friday afternoon. A Friday night social is in the works and will be announced soon.
The Metro Detroit area is a great place to spend some time. In addition to the kubb tournament, you could check out a local micro-brewery, visit the Henry Ford Museum, hit the slots at a Detroit casino, or grab dinner at one of the many restaurants. No matter what you choose, you’re sure to have a good time exploring the Motor City.
