The American Kubb Association has announced that it has formalized partnerships with four major championship kubb tournaments to create the AKA Open Championship Series. The organization is aiming to “unite championships from coast-to-coast under a unified competitive structure.” Tournaments included are the U.S. National Kubb Championship, West Coast Kubb Championship, Midwest Kubb Championship, and East Coast Kubb Championship.
According to Board President Collin Troy, this is a step towards a bigger mission. The American Kubb Association doesn’t want to impose a top-down structure, but instead formalize “what the community organically crated over nearly 20 years of grassroots development.”
The organization is hoping this framework helps to legitimize kubb nationally and lead towards growth of the game in many ways. According to the press release, this is the start of a three phase development strategy:
…establish legitimacy through championship partnerships, grow membership and secure sponsors while proving broadcast viability, then invest in comprehensive infrastructure including state associations and youth programs.
“This is the moment American kubb stops being independent tournaments and becomes a unified sporting enterprise,” said Troy. “This is just the beginning. We are building something legitimate together. That’s how grassroots movements become national institutions.”
