BATAVIA, Ill. — About a month ago, George Sloan was scrolling through Facebook and noticed a page he hadn’t seen before—the Midwest Kubb Championship. He wasn’t aware of this tournament (which hasn’t taken place since 2018 in Ohio) and wanted to learn more.
Sloan started to investigate. He scrolled through the pictures and read the posts—the most recent being in 2019. That was around the time Sloan had started playing kubb himself, so it made sense that he hadn’t heard of this particular tournament before.
The next stop was reaching out to other kubb tournament directors. Sloan typed up a simple message, “Does anyone know anything about the Midwest Kubb Championship, and who is the owner of the event?” This kicked off a flurry of responses. Sloan learned some of the tournament’s history, and Eric Anderson suggested bringing up the topic at an upcoming tournament director chat.
For those who don’t know, the Midwest Kubb Championship was originally created to help organizers promote their tournaments. The “Midwest” name was thought to garner more interest than locally focused names with media outlets. The original intent was to allow existing tournaments to use the name for a year and then pass it along to the next Midwest kubb tournament director. It traveled around the Midwest for many years, but has not been held since 2018.
The collective directors in the call were supportive of the idea to resurrect the traveling tournament. Sloan and Energy City Kubb have decided to turn this year’s Illinois Kubb Championship into the Midwest Kubb Championship. Sloan says, “We are beyond thrilled to bring back this historical event after five years of being dormant.” The goal is to grow the Batavia tournament, now in its sixth year, with the help of the Midwest name.
The Midwest Kubb Championship will be held on Saturday, Aug. 31, in Batavia, Illinois. You can follow along with the following links to get more details as they’re available.
