HARTFORD, Wisc.— Winter is in full swing in the Midwest, but that doesn’t stop the folks at Kettle Moraine Kubb from enjoying the game we all love. This year, Kettle Moraine Kubb will be hosting their first winter kubb tournament, Kubb on the Pond. The forecasts are looking promising for a “super cool knock-down good time.”
Set to take place on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2019, Kubb on the Pond stays true to Kettle Moraine Kubb’s location-based tournament naming style (Kubb in the Kettle, Kubb on the Beach), meaning this event will be played on—you guessed it—a frozen pond! Just a short walk along a wooded path in Schoof’s Preserve, the trail opens up to the kubb pond where all the fun takes place. This wintery site will be complete with a custom private tent-o-potty and Solo Stove fires for warming up. Lunch will be provided and includes hotdogs, veggie dogs, chips, and a hot beverage. Players are welcome to bring their own drinks and snacks as well. It is recommended to use a sled for hauling gear to the tournament site—two sleds will be available for use, or players may bring their own. A social gathering will happen at a local pub and grill following the tournament on Saturday night. If there is enough interest, there may be a Friday night social as well.
This tournament will use a scramble format with randomized teams of three players. Each round, players will match up with new teammates and accumulate their own individual points throughout the day. Individuals’ points will determine how players will be seeded into teams for the championship bracket, where they will then remain on the same team throughout that bracket. Awards will be given to the top team and there will be consolation prizes for others. The U.S. National Championship rules will be used, with the addition of the Friendly Neighbor rule.
Check-in/registration for Kubb on the Pond is from 9 to 10 a.m. Tournament play will begin at 10 a.m. The cost is $10 per player and those wishing to take part in Kubb on the Pond should pre-register by contacting Kettle Moraine Kubb through email at kettlemorainekubb@gmail.com or message through the Kettle Moraine Kubb Facebook page.
