MENOMONEE FALLS, Wisc. — This year Kettle Moraine Kubb is hosting its Kubb in the Kettle and Kubb on the Beach tournaments under one big holiday kubb weekend being dubbed as Kubbapalooza. It’s pegged to be a “full Labor Day holiday weekend of kubb fun” taking place at Menomonee Park in Menomonee Falls. Kubbapalooza kicks off Friday, Aug. 31 and concludes on Monday, Sept. 3. The tournament portion of the weekend consists of Kubb in the Kettle on Saturday, Sept. 1, followed by Kubb on the Beach the next day, Sunday, Sept. 2. Although it’s not required, everyone is encouraged to play in both tournaments and camp on a group campsite to get the most out of this weekend of kubb, camaraderie, and fun.
Day one of Kubbapalooza will have plenty of fun in store making it worth arriving early. Players who register to camp will have access to pitch their tent, trailer, RV, or van on a group campsite (think of it as Kubb Village). Camping is encouraged, but not required to partake in Kubbapalooza. After setting up camp, explore the park and enjoy the trails or beach, or stick around the group campsite for friendly games of kubb. In the evening, relax with a campfire social, complete with snacks from Milwaukee Bavarian Pretzel with craft beers and soft drinks. Friday promises to be a great kickoff to the holiday weekend of kubb.
Kubb in the Kettle
If you’re camping for the weekend there’ll be no need to drive anywhere as day two (Saturday) of Kubbapalooza kicks off with the Kubb in the Kettle tournament near the “Kubb Village” group campsite. Registration/Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m. Saturday with tournament play starting at 9 a.m. Teams of two or more players will compete in seven rounds of the Klassic system, and then the top eight teams will be seeded into the championship bracket, while all other teams will go into the silver bracket. Bracket play will consist of best-of-three-game matches. For lunch there will be a potluck with brats and hot dogs provided by Kettle Moraine Kubb. Players are asked to please bring a dish to pass. After the tournament, everyone is invited to stick around for the Cheddar Curtain Tour Awards and wood oven fired pizza from Cottonwood Trailer Pie with refreshments. Saturday evening will also include a campfire with s’mores.
Kubb on the Beach
Kubbapalooza continues with the Kubb on the Beach tournament on day three (Sunday). This tournament will be held on the beach at Lannon Quarry, just a short walk from the group campsite. Registration and check-in begins at 9 a.m. and the tournament play starts at 9:30 a.m. This tournament is a scrambler style, with teams of up to six players. A minimum of five rounds will be played and individuals will earn points to be seeded into the championship bracket, where play continues with teams of up to six players. A beach house on the premises will be open for food, and restrooms and showers are also available. After the tournament, there will be an evening campfire corn roast complete with dutch oven vittles back at the “Kubb Village” campsite.
Stick around Monday morning as Kubbapalooza continues with campfire cinnamon rolls for breakfast at the group campsite. Take a moment to relax and reflect on a great kubb weekend before packing up your camp. Early bird registration for Kubbapalooza 2019 will also be available at that time.
For registration details, check the Kettle Moraine Kubb website and the Facebook event page.
