EAU CLAIRE, Wisc. — The 2017 U.S. Junior Kubb Championship will mark the fourth edition of the largest junior kubb tournament in North America. The tournament is open to players 12 years old and younger with each participant receiving a kid kubb pennant, a 2017 U.S. Championship shirt, and a Culver’s frozen custard. The tournament takes place on Friday of championship weekend and they are expecting to bring in between 16 and 24 teams.
Last year the 24 team tournament was won by the Kubbicorns of Eau Claire. Each of the top four teams will receive medals Saturday morning on the podium in front of the 100s of players and spectators at the U.S. National Kubb Championship. The tournament will be played with U.S. National Championship Rules with a few exceptions. The pitches will be five meters by seven meters, teams can be two person and players won’t be able to throw more than two batons in a row. The tournament format will be round-robin with four teams in each group. Matches will be best of three with a 30 minute time limit per match.
One of our focuses since we started in 2007 has been introducing kids to kubb. Kid Kubb was a natural progression from that outreach. Kid Kubb is a great way to introduce kids to the competitive sport side of kubb and experience how much fun that can be. On Friday morning, many teams come to the Championship Field to practice. It is always great to see a lot of them stop practicing and cheer on the Kid Kubb teams. —Eric Anderson
