EAU CLAIRE, Wisc. — It might have been a –10 degrees on the outside at Wagner’s Lanes and The Complexx, but on the inside it was t-shirt, shorts, and toes-in-the-sand warm for the second annual Winter Meltdown Kubb Tournament.
The Eau Claire Kubb League hosted the event. Bridget Long was the director. This was a three player minimum tournament. Players competed in seven rounds using the DMK Klassic system with the top eight teams making it to the championship bracket. Twenty two teams showed up to battle.
The four teams to make it into the semi-finals were: License to Drill (Drew Brandenburg, Anne Bogstad, Drew Strait), Have Fun For Lydia (Casey Anderson, Cory Shay, Brian Winistorfer), Kubbitz (Riley Radcliffe, Dan Drumm, Jeff Gibson), and Great Lakes Chaska Kubb (Phil Dickinson, Jason Larson, John Oman, Mark Oman, Ford Rolfsrud). In the semi-finals, Great Lakes Chaska Kubb defeated Kubbitz. Have Fun For Lydia defeated License to Drill.
In the finals, License to Drill defeated Kubbitz for third place. Great Lakes Chaska Kubb defeated Have Fun For Lydia with only eight batons in the third game to take first place.
Great Lakes Chaska Kubb may have been the first six player team to ever win a minimum three player kubb tournament in the United States.
In the consolation match, El Ringers (Aaron Ellringer, Sy Ellringer, Blake Hanson) defeated Floyd (Ethan Forney, Paul Knutson, Ryan Kolden) to take first place.
