Students at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa have been learning the game of kubb. This is part of their team sports class this semester. With kubb sets on loan from Kubb United, the students are getting an introduction to the rules and playing games. There will even be a small in-class tournament over the next couple of weeks.
Aidan Wojciehowski, an assistant baseball coach and class instructor, proposed the game to the students. His father played in a tournament in Wisconsin. Wojciehowski learned the game from his dad and loved it, so he brought it to his students.
Students have been playing on the college stadium’s fields. The turf makes for an interesting playing surface. Senior Owen Ivanuck says, “The kubbs bounce straight backwards when you drill, so you have to throw them a foot past where you them when inkasting.”
The students have been receptive to the game. There is hope that kubb will be added to the curriculum and become a staple for years to come. Perhaps the students will find kubb to be something they continue to play and introduce to others as well.
