Brew City Kubb Classic 2023 Recap

MILWAUKEE — On Saturday, May 27 on the grounds of the Milwaukee Pretzel Company, the inaugural Brew City Kubb Classic was held. It was a sunny, deceivingly warm, day with dry drilling conditions and light batons. Things got underway with six rounds of qualifying, accompanied by soft pretzels and various dips.

After a short lunch break with brats and lots of sides (thanks Sara and Cody!), bracket play began. The top three teams had a first round bye, while the other 10 battled to see who’d end up in the silver and championship sides.

In the semi-finals, KubbFellas (Chad Stute, Andrew Thibodeau) took on Jonesin’ for Good Holtz (Adam Holtz, Bryan Jones), and Glori Rökers (Lars Arneson, Cody Glorioso) matched up with Wolves Throwing Wood (Jesse Fraim, Matt Green). Both matches would need the full three games to decide a winner. Eventually, though, KubbFellas and Wolves Throwing Wood came out on top.

Wolves Throwing Wood were just a little hotter on 8s in the first game, clearing their back row first. This, and an unfortunate line left by KubbFellas, helped them earn the game one victory. Their hot 8 meter play continued into game two, but this time KubbFellas had the answer. With a clutch baseline, baseline, and king turn, Andrew Thibodeau secured the KubbFellas a win and sent the match to game three.

The final game didn’t take long to get nine kubbs in play. Both teams were sharp on 8 meters. Jesse Fraim’s drilling was dialed in, and he tossed over a great looking pile of nine. He cleared eight of them, leaving a single kubb for Matt Green, who confidently picked it off, and the king for the championship title.
