Ask a Kubb Ref: Kubb Somersaults

I hit a field kubb. It did a couple of somersaults and stood itself upright again. Does it count as being knocked down? (This happen twice in one game!) New to Kubb—Thanks

    Mike Ward (Pittsburg, PA)

Thanks for the question, Mike! It’s great to see new players asking questions. I recently had a question similar to this from the Shin Busters that I answered on Facebook. Pages 5 and 6 of the current version of the rules on usakubb.org covers scenarios where a toppled kubb may be considered down or still up. The main factor you must consider is whether or not the kubb that was struck became parallel to the ground at any time. If so, then it’s down.

A struck kubb that rolls back end over end and then sits back up is still considered down as it was parallel to the ground at some point. See diagram below:

Diagram of a kubb somersaulting over itself.
In this example, the kubb does a complete end-over-end rotation. Since it was parallel to the ground at one point, it is considered down.

It is possible a struck kubb, in the process of falling to the ground, comes into contact with another game component (kubb, pin, baton, etc) and “sits” back up without it being parallel to the ground at any point. That would be considered still up. See diagram below:

Diagram of a kubb leaning against a stake.
In this example, the kubb leans on the stake (never getting parallel to the ground) and stands itself back up. This kubb is not down.

As always, be sure to submit any kubb questions you have to the Ask a Kubb Ref form, or use #AskAKubbRef hashtag on social media.
