EAU CLAIRE, Wisc. — Members of the Eau Claire Kubb League spread the joy of kubb during the Clearwater Winter Parade in Eau Claire on Friday, Dec. 2. The next day, the group also participated in the Bridge to Wonderland Parade in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin.
So how did this kubb-holiday mashup get started? Back in December of 2021, a group players and their families attended the Christmas parade in Chippewa Falls. Stimulated by hot chocolate, inspiration struck Audrey Deken who exclaimed, “We should have a fudging kubb float!” (Only she didn’t say fudge). Fast forward to 2022, there was an opportunity to participate in not one, but two parades. Planning commenced and several players began meeting to brainstorm and plan a grand display that would be a treat for the citizens of Eau Claire and Chippewa Falls.
The end result exceeded all expectations. Players from several teams, including Tyr’s Tre, Rotten Bunch, Super Smash Kubb, Kubboom, Kubboom Jr., Flux Capacitors, Poplar Culture, and Alien Kubberstars, came out to support the effort. With the kubb anthem “Let’s Play Kubb” blaring and set on repeat, the group set out. Buckets and buckets of candy and hundreds of U.S. Nattys coozies were distributed to as many attendees as possible.
Along the route, it was common to hear comments like “Kubb! I love kubb.” or “There’s a league for kubb? Wow!” Another phrase overheard was, “Kubb ? Must be a Wisconsin thing.”, Most commonly though, was a loud and drawn out “KUUUUUUBB!” The end result was newly discovered way to spread the joy of the beautiful game that is kubb. U.S. National Kubb Championship Director Eric Anderson said, “This was a new historic moment for kubb outreach / promotion and kubb as a whole.” It truly was! As is often said, kubb unites people and creates peace on Earth.
