STERLING, Ill. — For the third consecutive year, kubb enthusiasts from five states will get together at the residence of Owen and Rena Harrell (Andy Terveer’s father and mother-in-law) for a one-of-a-kind scrambler tournament.
J.R. Hrejsa (Indian River, Michigan) has made the 500 mile (each way) trip and taken home a share of the title each of the first two years. In 2020 Hrejsa was teamed with Evan Fitzgerald (South Beloit, Illinois) and in 2021, Scott Kent (Batavia, Illinois). A handful of new tournament rules should hopefully challenge him (and everyone else) a bit more this year—including alternating inkastares, and a new bracket format which mixes up teams throughout the playoffs.
Tournament play begins at 9 a.m. at 805 Ave D in Sterling with pitches open for practice at 7:45 a.m. There will also be a kubb social gathering on site Friday evening for anyone coming in to town earlier.
This looks to be a great day of kubb, with fun to be had by all. A $25 entry fee includes donuts, at least seven qualifying rounds of kubb, and at least one bracket match. A player’s pack and a lunch of pulled pork sandwiches and chips, or hot dogs will also be included. There will also be a chance to win some great prizes. Number of players is limited to 44 due to spacial constrictions.
