THEIF RIVER FALLS, Minn. — The tenth annual TRF Winter Kubb Championship took place outside of the Eagles Club in Thief River Falls on Jan. 12, 2019. A field of 15 teams participated. One team traveled from the Twin Cities, two teams traveled from Nimrod, Minnesota and three-time U.S. National Kubb Champion Grant Scott flew up from Des Moines, Iowa.
The tournament started at 11 a.m. sharp, and ended up being a perfect snow kubb day with temperatures at 25 degrees above zero. In past years, this tournament has typically been between 10 degrees above to 22 degrees below zero.
Play started with five, 25-minute single game rounds played across four pitches. That brought the tournament to around 330 p.m., at which point the top eight teams started championship division. These rounds switched to best of three game series. The first round was timed to one hour, but after that semi-finals top four battled without a time limite. At about 7 p.m. the championship series went to a third game with nine blocks in play. Perfect Storm (Ryan Kolden, Grant Scott) had a chance to win it all, but fell short. Their opponent, K Team (Vince Miramontes, Joe Sabol, Alex Winter), came back and cleared field and won the game.
It was a day of great competition and kubb fellowship. TRF Kubb feels very blessed to have such good people participating and supporting the TRF Winter Kubb Championship all the way up north. Thank you so much to all of you!
Final Results
- K Team (Vince Miramontes, Joe Sabol, Alex Winter)
- Perfect Storm (Ryan Kolden, Grant Scott)
- TC Choppers (Barb Lancette, Ben Lancette, Brian Ramsey)
