The 2018 U.S. Kubb Open brought to you by Kubb United with partnerships from Beloit Parks and Recreation and Visit Beloit will take place August 11, 2018. This will be the third iteration of the tournament, which was started in 2016 by Kubb United, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting Kubb in the United States. The tournament director is the president of Kubb United, Evan Fitzgerald. This tournament requires two person only teams, will utilize the Klassic style (seven rounds) format using the Kubb United Rules for Open Play and will be played on painted pitches. Last year, the 57 team tournament was won by the Kastpinnar Kings (Phil Goetstouwers, Ford Rolfsrud). This year, cash awards will be given to the top eight teams in the championship bracket and the top two in the consolation A bracket.
For lunch on Saturday, concessions will be provided by the Beloit Youth Hockey Association and will include beer. Also, Visit Beloit will be running a Rock, Paper, Scissors tournament throughout the day.
New to this tournament and to kubb will be a recorded broadcast of the tournament by Fox Sports Wisconsin. Kubb United Director Chris Hodges will be offering commentary and will be joined by lead announcer Shelley Till. Shelley is a former UNI basketball player and has been a commentator for the University of Iowa Women’s Basketball and Big Ten Network. The first airing of the U.S. Kubb Open will be August 24, immediately after the Brewers game.
There will be open pitches all day Friday with a pre-tournament gathering at 6 p.m. The location is still to be determined. On Sunday following the tournament, there will be a free 1v1 open to everyone beginning at 9 a.m. at Riverside Park.
