HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. — The stage was set with a perfect 81 degree, partly sunny day for the 2018 Queen City Kubb Spring Fling. The attendance was a little lighter than usual because of a last minute date change, but the competition was just a fierce! The morning started off with some timed, round robin matches and quickly saw who came to play. The early rounds had Some Short Dude and a Ginger (Nick Bartlett, Michael Roberts)—also know as Das Kubb—take out Kubbstaches (Mike Davids, Bob Hickes) 2-1 in the first match of the day. The Woodchuckers (Dan Fletcher, Aiden Fletcher, Brice McCracken), another local team, quickly moved through the ranks. The morning had some hard fought battles that shaped up nicely for the afternoon.

The semis saw the first seeded Some Short Dude and a Ginger, who had been hot all day, rolling through fourth seeded Clan McNaughton 2-0. The Kubbstaches also advanced with a well played 2-0 win against the Woodchuckers. The finals were set with a much anticipated rematch.

In game one, the Kubbstaches came out of the gate going one for two on the opening toss. Some Short Dude and a Ginger cleared in one then went zero for three. Kubbstaches answered quickly, clearing in one, then going three for five at 8 meters. Some Short Dude and a Ginger came back clearing in three batons, and then went cold again with three misses. Kubbstaches cleared in four batons on the next turn. They went in for the finish, and took game one.

Game two brought a lot of the same with a twist—Some Short Dude and a Ginger opened without a hit. Kubbstaches answered with 50 percent at 8 meters. It looked to be over quickly, but Some Short Dude and a Ginger came back clearing in a couple batons, followed by one for four. Kubbstaches were definitely peaking at the right time. Bob Hickes cleared four kubs with two batons, then hit an 8 meter. Mike Davids used two batons to clear the field, but missed the king with his final baton, squandering the opportunity to close out the game. Opportunity knocked for Some Short Dude and a Ginger, but they weren’t able to take advantage. Kubbstaches finally defeated them after yet another king miss the next turn, completing the three-peat of the Queen City Kubb Spring Fling! What a fun day!
