THIEF RIVER FALLS, Minn. — On Saturday, June 24, the seventh annual Thief River Falls Summer Kubb Tournament took place with 12 teams participating. After a few complications during setup, the tournament got underway just before 11 a.m. It was sunny, but windy until about 3 p.m. when it start to lightly rain for about two hours. “We kept the music on and the energy up, everybody was having a good time.” Tournament Director Ryan Kolden said.
There were five single game matchups before teams were seeded into an eight team championship bracket and a four team consolation bracket. Both brackets used best of three game matches.
In the championship bracket, Danny Behm and Michael Grey took on Kolden and Rikk Myhrer. Behm and Grey would win the match and the top prize.
Dave Ellringer and Paul Ellringer would take home third place. Kolden said, “The local players and I were truly honored to have Dave and his family travel north from Eau Claire, Wisconsin to participate in this tournament.”
Well after the championship bracket ended, an intense battle was still taking place. For about two hours, Vince Miramontes and his son Vince Jr. played against Steve and Stacey Wiseth. It was 9:45 p.m. before the match finally ended and the Miramontes were crowned consolation champions.
