ELY, Minn. — A field of 10 teams took part in the third annual Ely Winterfest Kubb Tournament. The snow-covered, but mostly frozen pitches were set up at Whiteside Park amongst massive snow sculptures and intrigued onlookers. The kubb tournament, held Saturday, Jan. 11, 2017, was one of many events that made up the 10 day-long Ely Winter Festival. It was relatively warm compared to last year’s sub-zero temperatures. This year the mercury hovered around the upper 20s or lower 30s most of the day. The sun peeked through and the wind was kept to a minimum, making for an enjoyable day of winter kubb.
The format started with six randomly selected matchups consisting of 25 minute games. After a couple of tie-breaking throw-offs, the field was narrowed to eight and a traditional championship bracket was used to determine a winner. The finals match was between the Berzerkerz (Cody Boyer, Clint Childers, Kristin Eckman) of Nimrod, Minnesota and St. Paul Kubb Society (Christopher Jones, Tim Motzko, Brian Winistorfer) of Minneapolis and Saint Paul, Minnesota. The Kubb Society were victorious with a 2-0 match win. Winners were awarded hand-made ceramic trophies and a gift card to the local Zup’s supermarket.
